Disney World and Jekyll Island: Parks, Golf, and Beach Time

A busy September road trip through Orlando and Walt Disney World, followed by a slower Jekyll Island finish with golf, beach time, seafood, and family.

Trip at a glance

  • Dates: September 2020
  • Route: Kingsland, Georgia → Orlando and Walt Disney World → Jekyll Island
  • Trip style: Theme parks, golf, food, and a relaxing beach finish
  • Highlights: EPCOT, Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom, three golf rounds, Disney Springs, and Jekyll Island

Thursday and Friday: The overnight drive to Orlando

We needed this vacation, so we packed as much as we could into one week. We left Thursday night and drove about seven and a half hours, reaching Kingsland, Georgia, around 2 a.m. McDonald's handled dinner on the road.

After only a few hours of sleep, we were back on the road by about 9 Friday morning. Our first Orlando stop was Gyu-Kaku, which we had enjoyed on our October 2019 trip. The restaurant looked different during the pandemic, with masks and additional precautions, but the lunch of pork, beef, and sake was every bit as good as we remembered.

We followed lunch with an hour at Topgolf. Orlando was extremely hot, so an almost-frozen Bud Light felt like the perfect partner for the range.

Our first hotel was Wyndham Lake Buena Vista, directly across from Disney Springs. After a nap, we walked over and made a full loop of the complex. It was still busy for a pandemic-era Friday, so we skipped the shops and shared loaded poutine from The Daily Poutine. It was a decent value by Disney Springs standards, although the pico de gallo did not work for me.

Saturday: Disney golf and an easy evening

Saturday began with a sausage, egg, and cheese bagel from the Joffrey's in the hotel lobby. At 12:09, I teed off for 18 holes at Disney's Magnolia Golf Course.

Magnolia was one of the nicest courses I had played since taking up golf a little more than a year earlier. I joined three golfers I did not know, and we turned the round into a two-on-two match. My game was uneven, but our side came out ahead. I shot 94 with a better back nine, and the well-maintained course made the day memorable even without my best score.

We tried to visit Old Town in Kissimmee afterward, but parking was unavailable. Rather than waste the evening circling, we picked up Checkers and returned to the room. It was inexpensive, good, and exactly what we needed after the round.

Sunday: A second round and Orlando food

Another Joffrey's breakfast started Sunday, this time a bacon, egg, and cheese biscuit. I then played Providence Golf Club and shot an 85.

Providence felt more relaxed and less crowded than Magnolia. We could take our time, which probably helped explain the lower score.

Dinner came from Noodles & Company: mac and cheese, Korean noodles with chicken, stroganoff, and potstickers. Dessert was the memorable part. Flippers Pizzeria made honey buns from pizza dough and topped them with bacon.

Monday: EPCOT and the Food & Wine Festival

Our Disney park stretch began when we moved to Pop Century Resort and boarded the Skyliner for EPCOT. The one-family-per-cabin procedure slowed the line, but eventually we were on our way.

Labor Day crowds were lighter than we expected. Frozen had a line stretching far through the park, so we skipped it and rode Mission: Space, Soarin' Around the World, Test Track, The Seas with Nemo & Friends, Journey Into Imagination, and the Disney & Pixar Short Film Festival. The short films were a first for us and became one of my favorite surprises.

The Food & Wine Festival booths gave us buffalo-chicken mac and cheese, Austrian beer, a chocolate-dipped cannoli, Violet Lemonade Ale, and dumplings. A little rain arrived, but not enough to damage the day. Lightning changed the trip back, so we took a bus instead of the Skyliner and ate pizza at the resort.

Tuesday: Magic Kingdom

The bus line to Magic Kingdom was the longest line we faced that day. Once inside, most attractions were around 20 minutes or less.

Seven Dwarfs Mine Train reached about 45 minutes after two technical stops and one cleaning pause, but we still rode everything we wanted. Instead of paying park prices for another meal, we ordered Huey Magoo's through Uber Eats. About $25 covered chicken tenders, delivery, and tip, and the tenders were worth trying.

Wednesday: Animal Kingdom and the drive to Jekyll Island

We arrived at Animal Kingdom for opening because we wanted to ride both Pandora attractions for the first time. Flight of Passage created our longest wait of the day, but it lived up to the reputation. We moved quickly through the rest of the park and left around 1:30.

Jekyll Island was roughly a three-hour drive from our hotel. A rock cracked the windshield along the way, and my wife had to get it patched the next day. With that delay, we reached the island around 6.

Dinner at Zachry's Riverhouse came with a marina view. I tried swordfish for the first time—it reminded me of a pork chop in texture—then had a fried oyster sandwich. After dinner, we drove the island's compact loop to get our bearings.

Thursday: Beach, golf, and Jacksonville

I spent about an hour at the beach before playing Pine Lakes at Jekyll Island Golf Club. I shot 88, or 16 over par, which I was happy to take on an unfamiliar course.

That evening we drove about an hour and a half to Topgolf Jacksonville. We ate, drank, hit balls, and played the property's mini-golf course. It was the first Topgolf I had visited with mini golf, and the course was challenging enough that a regular putter would have been fun.

Friday: A real rest day

Our last full day was deliberately simple. We sat on the beach with family, drank beer, and relaxed. Even on the busiest beach day of our stay, only about five groups were within 50 yards of us.

Dinner was bangers and mash at Wee Pub, followed by a walk around the nearby shopping center.

Heading home

We stopped at Play It Again Sports and Shane's Rib Shack on the return drive. By then, we had managed to fit in Orlando restaurants, three rounds of golf, three Disney parks, family time, and several quiet hours at the beach.

Final thoughts

The trip was a complete success because the two halves balanced each other. Orlando supplied the attractions and constant movement; Jekyll Island gave us space to slow down. If we repeated the route, I would still protect that final beach day instead of filling every hour.

Plan your own trip

Disney World and Jekyll Island Road-Trip Guide

This route pairs several high-energy Orlando days with a quieter Georgia coast finish. Give each Disney park its own purpose, avoid overloading travel days, and save at least one Jekyll Island day for the beach with no major reservation.

01

Use Jekyll Island as the slower second half

Break up the drive

An overnight near Kingsland can make a long trip to Orlando easier and places you close to the Jekyll Island exit for the return portion.

Stay near your priority

Choose Disney-area lodging for park transportation or an off-property hotel for price and flexibility. Compare the full cost, including parking and resort fees.

Move only when useful

A split Disney stay can improve transportation, but changing hotels consumes time. Pack a separate bag for the park portion if you change properties.

Protect the transition day

Leave the final Orlando park early enough to reach Jekyll Island before dark, eat dinner, and learn the island layout without rushing.

Our experience: Animal Kingdom worked well on the transfer day because we arrived at opening, completed our priorities, and left around 1:30 for the Georgia coast.

02

Give every park a short priority list

Before the trip

  • Buy the correct date-based ticket and confirm whether your admission type requires a park reservation.
  • Review official park hours because opening times, nighttime events, and early entry change by date.
  • Choose three must-do attractions per park and learn the current line-skipping options before arrival.
  • Check attraction refurbishments and height requirements for everyone in the group.

During the day

  • Arrive before opening for the most important high-demand attraction.
  • Use mobile ordering or one planned meal instead of deciding while everyone is hungry.
  • Build in an indoor show, slow attraction, or resort break during the hottest part of the day.
  • Keep transportation alternatives in mind when weather interrupts boats, gondolas, or outdoor routes.

Our experience: Skipping one long EPCOT line let us ride nearly everything else we wanted. At Animal Kingdom, starting with Pandora made it possible to finish early enough for the drive north.

03

Add golf without exhausting the non-golfers

Disney resort golf

A Disney course can keep the golfer close to the resort while the rest of the group enjoys Disney Springs, a pool, or another activity.

Off-property golf

Compare conditions, travel time, rental clubs, and pace of play. A quieter course may deliver a more relaxed round than a famous address.

Jekyll Island golf

The island can combine golf with a beach morning. Confirm which courses are operating and review current tee times before building the day.

Topgolf and mini golf

These are easier shared alternatives when the group does not want to devote four or five hours to a traditional round.

Our experience: Magnolia was the polished destination round, Providence was the relaxed scoring day, and Pine Lakes fit naturally between the beach and an evening outing.

04

Let Jekyll Island be more than an overnight stop

Outdoor choices

  • Beaches — explore the island's different beach areas, including the dramatic driftwood shoreline.
  • Biking — use the official map and remain on designated paths when possible.
  • Golf and mini golf — choose a full round or a shorter family activity.
  • Water outings — consider kayaking, a dolphin tour, or fishing when the weather cooperates.

History and wildlife

  • Historic District — walk, bike, or take a guided tour through the island's landmark area.
  • Georgia Sea Turtle Center — learn about rehabilitation and conservation; confirm admission and hours.
  • Mosaic museum — a useful indoor stop for understanding Jekyll's history.
  • Island drive — make an early loop to locate beaches, restaurants, shops, and the route back to the causeway.

Know before you go: Jekyll Island charges a vehicle entry and parking fee. Review the current rate before arrival, and remember that public beach lots do not allow overnight parking.

05

A balanced eight-night itinerary

Travel nightDrive partway and sleep near Kingsland or another convenient stop.

Orlando day 1Finish the drive, eat lunch, check in, and spend an easy evening at Disney Springs or the hotel.

Orlando day 2Play golf, enjoy the resort, or choose one non-park attraction.

Disney day 1Visit EPCOT and leave room for festival food or an evening show.

Disney day 2Make Magic Kingdom the full park day.

Transfer dayStart early at Animal Kingdom, complete the priority attractions, and drive to Jekyll Island in the afternoon.

Jekyll day 1Spend the morning at the beach, then choose golf, biking, or the Historic District.

Jekyll day 2Keep the day flexible for family beach time, Driftwood Beach, the Sea Turtle Center, or a water outing.

DepartureLeave after breakfast with only one optional stop planned for the drive home.

Why this combination works

Disney World and Jekyll Island offer opposite kinds of vacation in the same route. The parks reward preparation and early starts; the island rewards open time. Keeping those identities separate creates a trip that feels exciting without ending in complete exhaustion.
