A Mountain Yurt Weekend in Bryson City

A July 4th weekend in western North Carolina with a mountain golf stop, a Bryson City yurt, local breweries, a casino day trip, barbecue, and plenty of quiet mountain time.

Trip at a glance

  • Dates: July 2–5, 2020
  • Base: Sky Ridge Yurts near Bryson City, North Carolina
  • Trip style: A relaxed mountain road trip with golf, food, breweries, and day trips
  • Highlights: Springdale at Cold Mountain, yurt living, Hoppy Trout, Harrah's Cherokee Valley River, Currahee Brewing, and western North Carolina scenery

Thursday: Tacos, mountain golf, and our first night in a yurt

We left around 11 Thursday morning and began the trip with one of our favorite food stops: White Duck Taco Shop in Johnson City. We picked up four tacos to go, and the fresh ingredients and bold flavors were as good as anything we could have chosen for the drive.

The day's main stop was Springdale at Cold Mountain in Canton, North Carolina. The course felt like two different experiences. The front nine was flatter, open, and exposed to the sun; the back nine climbed into cooler, shaded mountain terrain. After about four and a half hours, it had already become one of my favorite courses.

Bryson City was roughly another hour away. We grabbed fast food to keep the evening simple, then checked into our yurt at Sky Ridge.

The yurt delivered more comfort than the word tent might suggest: air conditioning, heat, a microwave, shower, and a private fire-pit area with wooden seating. The fabric walls allowed occasional voices and laughter to drift between neighboring yurts, but the setting still felt private and peaceful.

Friday: Hoppy Trout and a Murphy casino day trip

We took our time Friday morning before driving toward Murphy. Lunch was at Hoppy Trout Brewing Company in Andrews, where we shared loaded nachos, pizza, and craft beer.

By about 1:30, we had reached Harrah's Cherokee Valley River Casino. The pandemic-era arrival involved a vehicle line, temperature check, masks, and the usual ID check.

We tried virtual roulette. I lost a $30 bet after my patience ran out, but my wife had better luck and brought us close to even for the day.

On the way back, we stopped at a local grocery store for regional beer and hot dogs. Roasting dinner over the yurt's fire was a better ending than adding another restaurant.

Saturday: Franklin, riverside beer, golf, and barbecue

Saturday began at La Dolce Vita with breakfast bagels and coffee. From there, we drove toward Franklin hoping to visit a brewery, but a busy event made us reconsider.

Currahee Brewing Company provided the quieter setting we wanted, including riverside seating where we could relax.

I found a simple nine-hole course in Franklin and played it twice for an 18-hole round. The flat layout was decent for the low price, and the property even had a pool for hot summer days.

Dinner was a large takeout platter from Fat Buddies Ribs & BBQ with beans, ribs, pork, chicken, brisket, bread, macaroni and cheese, potato salad, and slaw. Even after the hour-long drive back to the yurt, it still tasted like the right mountain-weekend meal.

A light rain took away our final campfire, so we let the night remain quiet instead.

Sunday: Packing up

We woke Sunday morning, packed the yurt, and headed home. It had not been a trip built around a major attraction. The appeal came from the mountain drives, a unique place to stay, two golf rounds, local food and beer, and the freedom to change plans when somewhere felt too busy.

Final thoughts

Bryson City made an excellent base for exploring western North Carolina. The yurt gave the weekend its identity, Springdale was the standout golf experience, and the smaller stops kept the trip relaxed. We only sampled what the area offers, which makes this one of those places that deserves a return trip for the waterfalls, rivers, train, and national park.

Plan your own trip

Bryson City Mountain Weekend Guide

Bryson City works best as a basecamp rather than a checklist. Choose one major outdoor experience, leave time for downtown and the yurt or cabin, and use nearby towns only when the drive adds something different to the weekend.

01

Choose lodging that becomes part of the trip

Yurt or glamping stay

Confirm the bed, bathroom, climate control, kitchen equipment, parking, and distance from neighboring units. Not every yurt offers the same comfort level.

Cabin

A cabin is useful for groups who want a full kitchen, indoor gathering space, and a dependable rainy-day base.

Downtown lodging

Stay near restaurants, shops, and the train when walkability matters more than privacy or a mountain view.

Campground

Choose this for the outdoor experience, but check seasonal operation, fire rules, generator policies, and the exact facilities at the site.

Our experience: The yurt gave us air conditioning, a shower, microwave, and fire pit while still feeling connected to the mountains. It became more memorable than a standard hotel room would have been.

02

Pick the mountain experience that fits your group

Lower-key choices

  • Deep Creek waterfalls — hike a short loop connecting Tom Branch, Indian Creek, and Juney Whank falls.
  • Fontana Lake — rent a kayak or paddleboard, take a boat outing, or enjoy the shoreline.
  • Scenic drive — explore the Road to Nowhere, Nantahala Gorge, or another mountain route after checking conditions.
  • Downtown Bryson City — browse shops, breweries, restaurants, and public art without committing a full day.

Bigger adventures

  • Nantahala rafting — reserve with a qualified outfitter and match the trip to the group's age and experience.
  • Great Smoky Mountains Railroad — make the excursion the day's main event and book popular dates early.
  • Longer hikes — carry water, a map, rain protection, and enough daylight for the chosen trail.
  • Mountain biking or fishing — verify current access, permits, rentals, and local regulations.

Water safety: The National Park Service warns that swimming and tubing in park waters carry serious hazards and are not recommended. Read current safety guidance rather than treating a mountain creek like a controlled water ride.

03

Use nearby towns for one focused outing

Cherokee

Pair the Oconaluftee area, cultural attractions, or elk viewing with a scenic drive. Observe wildlife from a safe distance.

Nantahala Gorge

Build the day around rafting, riverside recreation, or the scenic train rather than making the gorge only a drive-through.

Franklin

Combine a brewery, golf, gem mining, shopping, or a meal. Check the event calendar when visiting on a holiday weekend.

Murphy and Andrews

A casino, brewery, or restaurant can justify the drive, but compare the round-trip time with what you could do closer to Bryson City.

Our experience: Hoppy Trout made the Murphy drive feel like a day trip instead of only a casino visit. In Franklin, changing course when the first stop was crowded led us to relaxed riverside seating and an inexpensive round of golf.

04

Mix local meals with evenings at the fire

Food plan

  • Choose one breakfast or coffee shop before the day's longer drive.
  • Use a brewery lunch as the anchor for a nearby day trip.
  • Pick up barbecue or another sturdy takeout meal when lodging is outside town.
  • Buy breakfast, water, snacks, and one fire-pit or cabin dinner after check-in.

Golf plan

  • Use a mountain course on the arrival route when it does not create a late check-in.
  • Expect elevation changes and confirm cart policies, pace, and weather delays.
  • For a lower-cost round, look at municipal or nine-hole courses in nearby towns.
  • Leave enough daylight for winding mountain roads after the round.

Our experience: Springdale at Cold Mountain justified adding golf to the arrival day because the changing landscape made the course feel like an attraction. Hot dogs at the fire and barbecue takeout kept the other evenings easy.

05

A relaxed three-night Bryson City itinerary

ThursdayStop for lunch and optional golf along the route, then check into the yurt or cabin before dark.

Friday morningHike the Deep Creek waterfall area or explore downtown Bryson City.

Friday afternoonChoose rafting, Fontana Lake, the scenic railroad, or a focused day trip.

Friday eveningPick up groceries and spend the night at the fire pit or cabin.

Saturday morningHave breakfast in town, then choose Cherokee, Franklin, golf, or another mountain drive.

Saturday eveningOrder barbecue or reserve one local dinner and leave time to enjoy the lodging.

SundayPack slowly, stop for coffee, and head home without squeezing in another long mountain drive.

Best fit for this trip

This plan suits travelers who want scenic mountain time with a few flexible activities instead of a tightly scheduled attraction weekend. Bryson City supplies the base, while Deep Creek, Fontana Lake, Cherokee, Franklin, and the Nantahala Gorge provide several different ways to build the days.
