Carnival Elation to Amber Cove and Grand Turk
A five-night Carnival Elation cruise from Port Canaveral featuring an ocean-view zipline in Amber Cove, a rum-punch island tour in Grand Turk, comedy, dining, and easy sea days.

Trip at a glance
- Date: January 2020
- Ship: Carnival Elation
- Departure: Port Canaveral, Florida
- Ports: Amber Cove, Dominican Republic, and Grand Turk, Turks and Caicos
- Highlights: My first zipline, an island party-bus tour, turquoise water, comedy, and relaxed sea days
Getting to Port Canaveral
Our cruise began with a long overnight drive. The trip took about 11 hours of driving and more than 12 hours once we included stops. We managed roughly three hours of sleep before waking up only five minutes from the port.
This was our first departure from Port Canaveral, and the process was much smoother than the drive. Boarding Carnival Elation was easy, which gave us a chance to recover as soon as we stepped aboard.
Embarkation day: Lunch, sleep, and comedy
We followed our familiar first-day routine: lunch on the Lido deck, then a much-needed nap in the stateroom.
After the 4 p.m. safety briefing, we went to the main dining room around 6 and ended the night at a comedy show. It was a simple opening day, but after driving through the night, simple was exactly what we needed.
Sea day: Letting the ship set the pace
Our first full sea day was built from small cruise activities rather than a strict plan. We ate, visited an art auction, spent time in the casino, returned to the dining room, and filled the spaces between with whatever looked interesting.
Carnival ships often felt familiar to us in their general layout and daily rhythm, so the differences came from the people, entertainment, upper-deck features, and occasional food surprise. Elation gave us the comfortable version of that familiar experience.
Amber Cove: Off-road travel and my first zipline
Amber Cove immediately stood out. Mountains rose behind the port, and the lush scenery made the Dominican Republic feel dramatic before we even left the ship.
Our excursion began with a rough off-road ride into the countryside. The destination was a zipline course overlooking the ocean. My wife was hesitant, but I was excited because this would be my first time ziplining.
The early lines gave us a chance to learn the equipment and settle our nerves. Then the course opened toward the water. The final climb led to a cliffside launch and a suspended ocean view that made the whole excursion worthwhile.
Lunch followed the course, and the guides had photographed us throughout the experience. Instead of charging an extreme price for individual images, they offered the collection on a disc. The excursion earned an easy A from me because it combined the scenery, the off-road journey, and enough time on the ziplines to feel complete.
Grand Turk: Rum punch, the lighthouse, and the beach
Grand Turk delivered a completely different port day. The island was compact and surrounded by some of the clearest, brightest water we had seen.
We boarded a party bus near the cruise center with only a small group of other guests. A server mixed strong, sweet rum punch in the back while the DJ played island music and shared stories about Grand Turk.
Our first brief stop was a group of shops where we had about 15 minutes for souvenirs. From there, the bus continued toward the lighthouse at the far end of the island.
Near the lighthouse, we stepped onto a deck for a tasting of local spirits. I also tried a Turk's Head beer while enjoying the sunshine and the view.
The final stop was a beach less than half a mile from the ship. We had about an hour to relax by the water before returning. The excursion worked because it mixed sightseeing, music, drinks, local flavors, and beach time without making any one stop feel too long.
Final thoughts
This remains one of our favorite cruises. Amber Cove gave us the bigger adventure and one of the best excursion views we had experienced. Grand Turk gave us a fun overview of the island followed by time in that unforgettable water. The ship days were familiar and relaxing, while both ports felt distinct enough to give the cruise its own identity.

Carnival Elation, Amber Cove & Grand Turk Guide
This itinerary works best when the two ports serve different purposes: choose an active countryside or water adventure in Amber Cove, then use compact Grand Turk for an island overview, beach time, snorkeling, or a relaxed day near the ship.
01
Know what a smaller Carnival ship offers
Easy navigation
A smaller ship can be quicker to learn and easier to cross, which helps on a short cruise with only a few sea days.
Included dining
Review the current ship page for main dining, casual venues, operating hours, and any extra charges before assuming every Carnival ship has the same restaurants.
Entertainment
Comedy, live music, trivia, casino time, deck activities, and evening shows can fill the schedule without advance reservations.
Daily schedule
Use the Carnival app or onboard schedule to mark a few priorities, but leave enough open time for meals, naps, and the pool.
Our experience: Elation felt familiar rather than overwhelming. Lunch, a nap, dinner, and comedy made a better embarkation day than trying to tour every deck while exhausted.
02
Arrive rested instead of beginning in recovery mode
Drive plan
- For a trip of 10 hours or more, arrive near the port the day before and schedule a real night's sleep.
- Compare hotel parking packages with the terminal's current parking cost and transfer arrangements.
- Keep passports or required travel documents, medication, chargers, and a change of clothes in carry-on bags.
Boarding plan
- Complete online check-in and use the exact arrival appointment on the boarding documents.
- Attach luggage tags before reaching the terminal.
- Eat lunch, learn the essential routes, complete the safety process, and avoid overplanning the first afternoon.
Our lesson: The port experience was smooth, but three hours of sleep made the first day a recovery day. A proper pre-cruise hotel night would have improved the beginning of the vacation.
03
Choose between the port complex and the Dominican countryside
Active excursions
- Ziplining — compare the number and length of lines, transfer time, minimum age, weight limits, footwear rules, and activity rating.
- Waterfalls — expect hiking, wet rock, steps, and physical requirements on Damajagua-based tours.
- Buggy or ATV — plan for dust, mud, sun, and clothing that can get dirty.
- Boat or snorkel trip — review swimming ability, water conditions, and the time spent traveling to the launch.
Lower-key choices
- Enjoy the pools, shopping, restaurants, and views inside the Amber Cove complex.
- Take a sightseeing or cultural tour around Puerto Plata.
- Choose a beach day with transportation and return time clearly defined.
- Combine one shorter activity with time at the port rather than stacking two long tours.
Our experience: The off-road transfer made the zipline feel connected to the landscape, and the ocean-facing lines turned a first-time activity into the strongest memory of the cruise.
04
Decide how much of Grand Turk you want to see
Beach near the ship
The cruise-center beach is convenient for a simple day, but check the exact chair, umbrella, food, and beverage arrangements before settling in.
Island tour
A bus, trike, or guided vehicle tour can connect Cockburn Town, the salt ponds, lighthouse area, local shops, and beach time.
Water excursion
Snorkeling, diving, catamaran trips, and Gibbs Cay experiences make the clear water the day's focus.
Independent exploring
Use only clearly identified transportation, agree on the fare, know ship time, and leave a large return margin.
Our experience: The party bus gave us a broad island sample without sacrificing the beach. The rum punch made it fun, but anyone drinking on a moving tour still needs water, sun protection, and awareness of the return schedule.
05
A balanced five-night cruise plan
Pre-cruise dayDrive or fly to the port area, eat an easy dinner, and get a full night's sleep.
EmbarkationBoard, eat lunch, unpack, complete the safety process, explore key decks, and choose one evening show.
Sea dayMix one scheduled activity with pool time, food, casino, comedy, or a nap.
Amber CoveChoose the active excursion—zipline, waterfalls, buggy, rafting, or snorkeling—and leave a little time for the port complex.
Grand TurkTour the island, snorkel, or spend most of the day at the beach close to the ship.
Final sea dayRepeat favorite ship activities, pack before dinner, and review departure instructions.
Best fit for this itinerary
This cruise suits travelers who want one adventurous port, one easy beach-and-island port, and a familiar Carnival experience between them. Our best combination was an active Amber Cove excursion followed by a social Grand Turk tour with time in the water.
