Carnival Elation: Freeport, Nassau & Pearl Island

A five-night road-and-cruise getaway aboard Carnival Elation, featuring Bahamian beer in Freeport, Port Lucaya, a sunny Pearl Island excursion from Nassau, relaxed sea time, and one of our fastest embarkations.

Trip at a glance

  • Dates: March 1–6, 2023
  • Ship: Carnival Elation
  • Departure port: Jacksonville, Florida
  • Stops: Freeport and Nassau, with a Pearl Island excursion

March 1: Driving toward Jacksonville

We started this whirlwind trip after work on Wednesday evening. Zaxby's handled dinner before we continued past Savannah and stopped for the night at a basic Super 8. It was not a destination hotel, but it shortened the next morning's drive to Jacksonville to about an hour and 45 minutes.

March 2: Our fastest embarkation yet

We were up early for Dunkin' breakfast and reached the cruise terminal ready for the usual lines. Instead, boarding moved faster than any cruise we had taken. By 11 a.m., we were onboard, had completed the muster requirement, and were eating lunch. I ordered a Reuben, while my wife chose a burger.

We relaxed outside until the room was ready around 1:30. Sail-away from Jacksonville took us beneath the large bridge and past military equipment, waterfront homes, and the city shoreline.

Dinner included brisket, salmon, calamari, and a cheese plate. It was a strong first-night meal and an easy finish to a day that had gone unusually smoothly.

March 3: Bahamian beer and Port Lucaya

Because our Freeport excursion did not begin until 1 p.m., we had a slow morning with breakfast burritos and Monopoly Deal.

The excursion started somewhat chaotically, but improved once we reached the Bahamian Brewery. We sampled several beers at the bar, including the new Bush Crack Light, and enjoyed getting a taste of something made on Grand Bahama rather than staying only in the cruise-port shops.

We continued to Port Lucaya Marketplace. The area looked more worn and quieter than we remembered, but we still found places to enjoy the afternoon. My wife ordered a piña colada; I had two beers and a complimentary margarita. Back near the port, we finished with rum shots served in souvenir glasses and returned to the ship with about an hour to spare.

That evening, we bought cards for Deal or No Deal. The suspense was fun, but the prizes did not come our way.

March 4: Pearl Island from Nassau

We expected to leave the ship early in Nassau, but our excursion time eventually shifted to around 11 a.m. Breakfast burritos filled the wait.

The boat ride to Pearl Island passed Atlantis, large waterfront homes, and a golf course. Once there, lunch included rice, barbecue chicken, fish, and vegetables. I paired it with a bucket of Kalik Light and later a rum shot.

Pearl Island offered exactly the kind of uncomplicated port day we wanted: beaches, games, water activities, snorkeling, and enough open time to relax. The lighthouse and clear water gave the outing more personality than a standard resort stop.

March 5: One quiet sea day

Our only full sea day began with steak and eggs. We did very little afterward, which felt appropriate after two port days. An elderflower cupcake became the small food highlight of the afternoon.

My wife tried roulette and lost about $100, while most of the day passed quietly around the ship. We did not feel a need to fill every hour with scheduled activities.

March 6: Off the ship and home

We were ready to disembark around 7:30 and made excellent time leaving the ship. A stop at Wayback Burgers broke up the drive and gave the trip one final meal before home.

Final thoughts

This short sailing worked because the logistics stayed simple. Jacksonville gave us our quickest boarding experience, Freeport became a local-beer and marketplace day, and Pearl Island supplied the classic beach excursion. The quiet sea day made the fast road trip feel less rushed before we headed home.

Freeport & Nassau Cruise-Port Guide

Our short Carnival sailing combined a tasting-and-marketplace day in Freeport with a private-island beach excursion from Nassau. Both ports offer more choices, so this guide helps match the day to your interests and energy.

01

Freeport: choose more than the cruise port

The main attractions of Grand Bahama are spread out, so transportation should be part of the plan. Our brewery-and-Port-Lucaya excursion worked because it bundled both stops together.

Port Lucaya Marketplace

A waterfront area for shops, crafts, restaurants, bars, and entertainment. Conditions and the number of open businesses can change, so check recent information.

Lucayan National Park

Nature trails and elevated boardwalks cross several island ecosystems and lead toward Gold Rock Beach. This is the stronger choice for nature and scenery.

Peterson Cay

A small offshore national park reached by boat and known for snorkeling and diving around several reef zones.

Local flavor

A brewery, conch stand, or Bahamian meal adds more identity to the port day than shopping alone.

Our experience: Port Lucaya felt quieter and more worn than on an earlier visit, but the brewery made the excursion worthwhile. If the marketplace is your only destination, verify what is currently open.

02

Nassau: beach, history, or Paradise Island

Nassau can be an easy walking port or the starting point for a larger excursion. Choose one theme so traffic, boat transfers, and lines do not consume the visit.

Stay near downtown

  • Historic landmarks — Government House, Queen's Staircase, and nearby forts can form a culture-focused route.
  • Downtown streets — murals, shops, restaurants, and Bahamian food fit a shorter port call.
  • Junkanoo Beach — a convenient beach option when you want to stay closer to the ship.

Go farther

  • Paradise Island and Atlantis — resort attractions, marine habitats, beaches, waterpark access, and dining depending on the pass or excursion.
  • Cable or Cabbage Beach — build a straightforward beach day away from the immediate port area.
  • Private-island excursion — Pearl Island or another cay creates a more complete water-and-beach experience.

03

Pearl Island: an easy beach-excursion formula

Our excursion bundled the boat ride, lunch, beach time, and optional activities into one simple day. It removed most of the decision-making after we left Nassau.

Beach escape

Two beaches and shaded areas make relaxation the default rather than something squeezed between activities.

Lighthouse walk

The island's paths and lighthouse add a recognizable landmark and a reason to explore beyond the nearest chair.

Snorkeling

Guided reef snorkeling may be offered as part of selected packages. Check age rules, equipment, and sea conditions.

Lunch and drinks

Confirm exactly what the package includes and whether drinks, upgraded seating, or cabanas cost extra.

How we would book it: Compare the cruise-line excursion with the island's current packages, then prioritize dependable return transportation over saving a small amount.

04

Make a short cruise feel complete

Before sailingBreak up the drive with one practical overnight stop, then arrive at the terminal rested.

FreeportChoose one bundled outing: marketplace and local flavor, a nature-and-beach trip, or a reef excursion.

NassauPick either downtown history, a dedicated beach, Atlantis, or a private island—not all four.

Sea dayLeave it flexible for brunch, games, entertainment, and rest instead of scheduling every hour.

What worked for us

Each port had one clear plan, and neither required racing across the island. The brewery distinguished Freeport, while Pearl Island gave Nassau a full beach-day identity. That balance left the sea day open for doing almost nothing.
